Abstract

China is fast becoming the leading trading partner, sources of investments and project financing fund in Africa. African leaders are widely engaged in what is called ‘closed window’ deals with China. On the other hand, the role of the western nations is ever diminishing while China’s role is ever expanding. Ethiopia is one at the forefront of hosts of deals with China. Such engagements definitely brought with it both opportunities and challenges. Among the challenges are massive piling debts and servicing these debts via natural resource as debts are largely repaid in kind via natural resources. On the other hand, multiple opportunities, like technology transfer and availability of funds, can be seen in this collaboration. This Article is set out to question the relationship of Africa with China by taking the experiences of Ethiopia. The aim is to encourage debates, discussion and further researches on China-Africa relation.
